Mason "Mace" Beard, also known as the aliases of The Kid, ASAPH, or The Bearded Dragon, is an American musician that began his musical career around 2015. Beard began with the band Haloed Patriots, which was simply an assortment of local friends who had wanted to try and play music or hang out. However, after time passed, the band disbanded, which led to Beard create Mystic Winter with Daniel Treen, also formerly of Haloed Patriots.[1] In Beard's tenure, he has been a part of a plethora of bands including Symphony of Heaven, The Thlipsis, The Abrasive Realization, Koronatizor, Risen, Timōrātus, and many more.[2]

Beard has also been involved in every release through The Bearded Dragon Productions, as he created the label and works as an owner and artist.[2] Beard also runs a podcast called the Life of Defiance Podcast, which was created between him and Roland Street.[3] Beard has also written for Indie Vision Music and currently manages The Metal Onslaught Magazine.[4][5]

History[]

Mason Beard grew up in rural Indiana.[1] He began playing music when he was 10 or 11, beginning with the piano.[1] However, he lacked an interest in playing piano, as he had always wanted to play drums. He began playing drums at age 13.[1][3] In November 2015, he began a music blog called The Bearded Dragon's Metal, which covered at the time obscure bands, including What We Do in Secret and Saints Can Lie. He would also review albums, both new and old.[6] In September 2016, Beard had began Haloed Patriots alongside Luke Norris.[7]

Influences[]

Beard has stated that he has been influenced by several metal artists in both the secular and Christian market, including Living Sacrifice, Death Requisite, Slayer, Shai Hulud, Death, A Hill to Die Upon, Vials of Wrath, Extol, Zao, Embodyment, Becoming the Archetype, Abated Mass of Flesh, Skald in Veum, Drottnar, The Burial, and Relient K.[1] In his select vocal performances, he noted that he viewed Bruce Fitzhugh (Living Sacrifice), Kris McCaddon (Embodyment, The Famine), Matthew Plunkett (Abated Mass of Flesh), Elisha Mullins (The Burial), Tom Araya (Slayer), Chuck Schuldiner (Death), and Max Cavalera (Sepultura) as his vocal influences.[1]

He also listed a plethora of bands that inducted him into the scene, after growing up with the Christian metal, which he still loves.[1] Living Sacrifice, Zao, Becoming the Archetype, A Thousand Times Repent, and Demon Hunter were the bands that Beard began to listen to and over the years, the list would include: Extol, Ascending King, Vials of Wrath, older Mortification, Vengeance Rising, Deliverance, old Embodyment, August Burns Red, Strongarm, Unashamed, Abated Mass of Flesh, As They Sleep, Cerimonial Sacred, Impending Doom, Heliocentric, O Wretched Man, Death Requisite, and Not Beneath.[1]
